Devil’s Night Detroit™ and our partners Devil's Night Film Festival's film programming exists at the edges of cinema, where artists continue to challenge what the moving image can become.
Every work presented by Devil’s Night Detroit™ begins with a human decision.
We are artists, filmmakers, musicians, designers, and curators. We do not surrender authorship to technology. We exercise it through judgment, experience, taste, intention, and responsibility. Every film we program, every image we publish, every performance we present, and every experiment we undertake ultimately passes through human hands.
We are the human in the loop.
The Work Comes First
Devil’s Night celebrates horror, experimental, avant-garde, arthouse, underground, hybrid, and emerging forms of moving-image culture.
We do not believe cinema is defined by a particular camera, film stock, software, production method, or technology. Nor do we believe any generation gets to permanently determine where the boundaries of the medium must remain. Generative AI is part of that evolving landscape.
Trust Is the Foundation
Trust is the foundation this rests upon: between artist and audience, artist and subject, curator and artist, and between the tool and the hand that wields it.
- Experimentation does not excuse exploitation.
- Innovation does not erase accountability.
- And artistic freedom does not relieve the artist of responsibility for the choices made in creating the work.
Human in the Loop
For us, human in the loop means more than having a person type a prompt. It means human intention remains present throughout the creative process: choosing, rejecting, directing, editing, transforming, contextualizing, and ultimately taking responsibility for what enters the world.
Where We Stand
We will select work because it moves us, disturbs us, challenges us, or shows us something we have not seen before—and because we can recognize intention, authorship, and responsibility in the hand behind it.
